What is the Latest Google Update of 2026
The latest update launched by Google in 2026 is The March 2026 Core Update which took 2 to 3 weeks to complete. This update was released just weeks after the launch of March 2026 Spam Update (The fastest update ever to be rolled out by Google in 20 hours). The Core Update has hit the websites worldwide not as a punishment but to reassess their content quality. As a result, a significant traffic drop can be seen in the search console. In this post, I'm going to share what I learned so far, including what changed after the release of Core Update and what should be done to overcome these changes.
What Changed Due to The March 2026 Core Update
The March 2026 Core Update has changed the way we use AI for SEO. Now, originality matters more than anything. As SEO professionals, we were already expecting this to happen sooner or later. The way artificial intelligence took over content creation was a sigh of relief for digital marketers. Creating content in few minutes (which looks high-quality) became possible for anybody thanks to AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, etc. But it resulted in a huge pile of repetitive information lacking originality. Therefore, Google launched the latest update to free it's data base from these "junk" and provide genuine content to its users.
Here I'm breaking down what changed due to The March 2026 Core Update and what you should do to survive this change.
1. E-E-A-T is Crucial Now
E-E-A-T means Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trust. It is a model by which Google determines the quality of a web content. It was not a direct ranking factor before, but after the latest Core Update, it cannot be taken lightly. To rank a content, Google now prefer the following criteria based on E-E-A-T:
Prove Your Expertise: You must write a content doing your own research instead of repeating the information which is already present. Google now wants real data like case studies, insights, etc.
Be More Human: Your content should not feel robotic. Robotic content means it's generated by AI. Google is smart enough to catch AI generated contents. Write in your own language to let Google know you are the expert in your field.
- Don't Write for Link Building: Gone are the days when we use sources and citations for the sake of getting links back from them. For getting links we overlook the quality and genuinity of the source. Use sources and citations which Google trusts.
Web content is not about giving information anymore. Google now determines the quality of a content based on E-E-A-T. Write content showing your expertise in order to gain Google's trust.
2. Give New Information
Your content must provide real information to the users. Summarizing the information from other sources online is not going to work now. Google want you to use your original study and research. AI generated content is also discouraged by Google. To abide by Google's new March 2026 Core Update, following points should be kept in mind:
New Information: Your content should be able to give something new to your users. Avoid taking other sources information. Try to add your experience and thoughts.
Avoid Rewriting Existing Articles: This was the strategy that I use to implement in my SEO work. But this is not the case now. It's all about serving brand new content to Google. So avoid wasting your time and effort in refreshing the old articles.
- Use Original Data: Instead of just copying others work, do your own research. Share what you learned. Google loves that. Try to add original insights in your content.
Providing new knowledge to its users is Google's focus. It's not only limited to the people who are browsing, but also to the creators. The new update emphasizes on learning new information and sharing with others through Google.
3. Avoid Low-Quality AI Content
The March 2026 Google Core Update doesn't mean that Google is against AI tools. But it discourages the use of AI to generate scaled-content without paying attention to its quality. AI has bombarded search engine with millions of content which are repetitive, lack genuinity, and hardly give any new information to its users. The latest Core Update is rolled out by the Google to free up its digital space from such low-quality content, not to ban AI tools. This update is against:
- Mass generation of content using AI overlooking its quality.
- Contents which are repetitive and doesn't provide any new information.
- Contents without any real research, data, and insights.
Write content which can yield value to its users. It must display a human-like experience instead of resembling a robotic product. Showing your content's true worth is very important now. With the latest Core Update, It's officially time to change the strategy of how we used to rank our content. Do your own study, share your experience in your niche whether it's a success or downfall. Taking help of AI to refine your writing is ok but the idea of your content must be yours.
4. Content-Quality Matters More Than SEO Tricks
I started my SEO journey learning SEO tricks to rank my content in Google. In fact, I'm still fond of training myself in new SEO tactics. But the latest Core Update of 2026 has made me to upgrade my SEO strategy. According to this new update, only relying on SEO to rank your content is not enough. Content-quality has to be given the superior priority now.
Content Depth - Google is giving more importance to your content level. Make your content insightful, informative, and unique to stand out in the crowd.
Relevance - Your content must be relevant to the search intent. Search intent is the purpose of search query that your users are using. Your content must fulfill that purpose.
- User Experience - User experience is still important for Google. Make sure it's easy for the users to access your content. Make your content easy to read and navigate.
Only relying on SEO to rank your content in Google is not sufficient. Upgrade your strategy, give more time and effort to generate content. Creating one good article gives more value than generating mass content without any context.
5. March 2026 Google Core Update Impact on Industries
The March 2026 Google Core Update has a huge impact on some industries. Some websites got hit badly due to their content farming tactics. The websites which relied heavily on AI to produce mass content without any genuine insights were the worst affected. The sites which suffered the most are:
Affiliated Site: These sites used thin content with the sole purpose of promotion. With the new update it has become difficult for such sites to rank as Google now strictly discourages salesy content without any depth.
AI Content Farms: Content farming through AI like blogs are hit hard due to the latest Core Update. Producing mass content using AI models to rank your website in Google is not a good strategy anymore.
- Clickbait News Sites: News sites usually use exaggerated overly hyped headlines to get clicks. This is done to generate revenue through advertising. It not only creates bad experience for the users due to disrupting ad pop-ups but also misleads them into false information. With its latest update, Google has targeted such sites to discourage clickbait practices.
Apart from the badly affected ones there are some industries which took the positive side of Google. These are the websites which provided true value to its users by providing genuine content. The sites rewarded by Google are:
Expert Blogs: These are the blogs which proved there expertise by giving meaningful, informative, and insightful content to their users.
Topical Authority Websites: These websites have earned themselves credibility in a focused market. Google rewarded them as a go-to-source in their niche.
- Researched Content: Contents which are originally researched primary work instead of summarizing other work are the big winners.
6. The March 2026 Core Update Vs. February 2026 Discover Update
Before the release of
March 2026 Core Update, Google rolled out the
Discover Core Update on February 5, 2026. Both of these updates caused a huge instability in the
Searchscape. The
Discover Update was intended to upgrade the ranking system in the
Google Discover. Being the first-ever
Discover Core Update, It focused on improving the user experience by providing high-quality, insightful, and relevant content according to the user's past browsing behavior. It reduced exaggerated content and
clickbaits.
The March 2026 Core Update was aimed to improve the user experience in SERP, whereas The February 2026 Discover Update was focused to improve user experience in Discover. Together they both changed the way SEO was done before.
7. How to Overcome The March 2026 Core Update - Practical Steps
To overcome from the impact of The March 2026 Core Update, it is important to understand what Google wants. Google is saying to you, "Don't just write content for the sake of ranking, but write for the users based on real experience. Give users something which is useful and insightful. Create In-Depth Content: Rather than just summarizing the content from other sources write an in-depth content which covers all the aspects of a topic.
